But baristas and behavioral psychologists — two groups who rarely get lumped together — actually agree on something: how you make your coffee matters almost as much as the coffee itself. The ritual, it turns out, is doing serious work.

Why Ritual Is More Than Just Habit

Habits are automatic. You do them without thinking, which is kind of the point. Rituals are different. A ritual is a habit you've decided to pay attention to — and that shift in awareness changes everything about how it lands in your brain.
